Coding Club @ Niceville Library Tickets

For the spring, our Coding Club will meet every Thursday from 4:00-5:00.  The club is open to grades 5-8, and registration is required.  This spring will be an introduction to HTML/CSS.  (HTML is the coding language used to make web pages.)

Each meeting of Coding Club will have an exercise for participants to complete aimed at helping them to learn HTML/CSS coding.  It is recommended that participants attend all meetings as future meetings will build on previously covered concepts.  Club size is limited to 14 students as we have a limited number of laptops for participants to use.  A new sign-up sheet will be available for every meeting.

Meeting dates:  February 7, 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2 & 9.

No prior coding experience is necessary.

Banned Books Week Break-and-Make Art @ Destin Library Tickets

Banned Books Week is a celebration of our freedom to access information, particularly books, free from the constraints of censorship. What better way to mark the occasion than by breaking some books??

Join us for an evening of crafty destruction as we cut, tear, fold, glue, and mark up pages of books that have been discarded from the library’s collection. We will have instructions for folded book art, decoupage/paper-mâché, blackout poetry, and book page painting available. Participants will also learn about the practice of challenging and banning books, how it impacts schools and libraries, and what they can do to support their freedom to read.

Family Library Time: Anti-bully Karate Class @ Crestview Library Tickets

Atlas Martial Arts gym of Crestview owner Sensei Brannon “Mak” Remaklus will speak on the topic of bullying with a real-world application and understanding of what bullying is (and what it is not) at the Crestview Public Library on Friday, September 27.  He uses a coaching approach with a high prioritization on autonomy, responsibility, self-discipline and character building.  His intervention technique acknowledges everyone’s personal role of responsibility.  Following this discussion, there will be a demonstration by current students and then some brief sample instruction with interaction.  Finally, participants will get to make their own finger puppet ninja to take home.  This free Family Library Time begins at 6:30 p.m. and will last about an hour.  Doors open at 6:15 p.m. to the first 30 kids ages four to seventeen.

Younger siblings (accompanied by an adult) and older children are welcome.  All children must be able to sit quietly; if your child isn’t ready for quiet sitting, please come to the 0-2 class.  It has a lot more movement!  You may stay with or drop off your age three or older child (depending on your child’s comfort and behavior).  If you stay, please model listening and participation.  If you drop off, please return by 10:30 a.m. because your child might need your help with the craft.  Crafts will be available to the first 20 (ages 3 and up) to sign in each day.
